Contract Chiseling

Hey guys,
People seem to be opposed to the practice of contract chiseling.
Over the past few sims, I have offered a new one-year deal to Brendan Morrison each sim.
Each offer is for a little less than he currently makes
With no salary bonus.
He has accepted each time.
His contract has gone from $3.2 to $2.5
It's my goal to get him down to the $1.6M to $2M range, because that is what I think he is worth.
If he gets down that low, I will sign him to a long-term deal.
If not, he will be traded or let go as a UFA.

I know this is unrealistic. But he's agreeing to it, so the AI must understand, at some level, that he's drastically overpaid right now.

Some are opposed, calling this exploitation (it is) or cheating (it isn't, IMO, because there is no rule.)

Question is, should there be a rule?

I lean towards "No."

Here are my reasons.
I tried this with all my players in their final year. Only one accepted. Morrison.
And you have to ask yourself why the AI would allow Morrison to agree, but nnot allow the other guys to agree/
I think it's because Morrison's salary is WAY out of line with his REPUTATION, which I believe is KEY to salary.

If this hitch in the system allows a team to get a player into a reasonable contact, I don't see a problem.

I guess where it would be a problem is if someone was able to use this to get a star to sign for far less than his value.

But I don't know whether the AI would allow that.

I think Randy is basically right. its not cheating, but its exploiting. I wouldnt have much of a problem with it if would only affect next years contract (even if it would be extremely unrealistic negotiating a contract over and over again) but with even getting this years salary down its a no-go.
There is a reason why good players with high salary can be found on waivers from time to time. If salary can be lowered midseason, it takes away another key part of the game.
That being said, i dont care too much about this, there are far worse exploitations going on in htis league and i would be really happy if there would be more players just playing the game and not trying to get an unfair advantage. On the other hand we shouldnt nanny everyone. I just dont see how anyone can have fun with this game when he tries every exploit he can get.

Underhanded tactic to get out of mismanaged contracts. I do not approve.

I also find it comical how a player playing at almost a PPG pace with a 7.56 avg isn't worth at least 3 mil.

Ok, trade me a first round pick for Morrison. Deal? Didn't think so.
Come on, Morrison was overpaid. His salary was $3.2M, which was very close to Pavel Datsyuk's contract.

What I have done with Morrison isn't uncommon and it has been done by several GMs.

I noted there were three people in the chat against the practice. So, I figured it was a good topic for a healthy, positive discussion.

agreed, its not cheating because its not like you can do it with any1. only some players will agree 2 it, most of the time the player will reject ya.

Are you SERIOUSLY bringing this up so that you can find someone to trade you a 1st for morrison?!?! This is the dumbest topic I have ever seen.

I want to make this a rule, just to shut you up so we don't have to hear about "Lowered morrison by another 100K"

I use this every now and then, but I find its good for maybe 400-600K after that they decline the contract, and it never works with stars...but I wouldn't be opposed to rule, but it'd be impossible to enforce.
